I would like to learn about the process of writing and publishing a book? I have a life story to tell.?

Any advise for someone who wants to write to be published? I do understand that it is a process and I really think I have something to say. I have done some journals and term papers in college, but aside from putting together the Occupational Outlook for my county I don't have any "published work". Are there writing schools that that have a good reputation that have courses to be taken on line?
